Religious Liberty

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,   for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
1 Tim 2:1-2 (ESV)

XVII. Religious Liberty
God alone is Lord of the conscience, and He has left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men which are contrary to His Word or not contained in it. Church and state should be separate. The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. In providing for such freedom no ecclesiastical group or denomination should be favored by the state more than others. Civil government being ordained of God, it is the duty of Christians to render loyal obedience thereto in all things not contrary to the revealed will of God. The church should not resort to the civil power to carry on its work. The gospel of Christ contemplates spiritual means alone for the pursuit of its ends. The state has no right to impose penalties for religious opinions of any kind. The state has no right to impose taxes for the support of any form of religion. A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal, and this implies the right of free and unhindered access to God on the part of all men, and the right to form and propagate opinions in the sphere of religion without interference by the civil power.

Religious liberty has always been  a Baptist principle and a Baptist passion. Our commitment is to religious liberty for all peoples, not just for Baptists, because we believe that every human being is created in God's image and possesses full rights and freedoms granted by the Creator, as well as full accountability.

Early Baptists suffered intense persecution and hostility, which taught Baptists to recognize the necessity of authentic religious liberty.

Christians must be free to bring their biblically informed understanding of moral truth to the nation's public policy debates as the salt and the light that Christ has commanded them to be (see Matthew 5:13-16), even as they contend for full religious liberty for all citizens, whatever their faith.

E. Y. Mullins once defined the Baptist concept as "a free church in  free state." These words remind Baptists of our responsibility to protect, defend, and contend for religious liberty at home and around the world. This is part of our Baptist witness and our gospel task.

The Greatest Story Ever Told - The Biblical Meta-narrative using famous art!

“… the Christian gospel . . .  tells how for the world’s redemption God entered into history, the eternal came into time, the kingdom of heaven invaded the realm of earth, in the great events of the incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. ”

Faith's Review and Expectation: AMAZING GRACE

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace"            Ephesians 1:7 (ESV)

Here are some things you may not know about John Newton's most famous hymn. His title for it wasn't  originally "Amazing Grace" but "Faith's Review and Expectation."  It is based on his study of 1 Chronicles 17:16-17:  "Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: "Who am I, O LORD God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?  "And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O God; and You have also spoken of Your servant's house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, O LORD God."
1 Chronicles 17:16-17 (NKJV)

On Friday morning, January 1, 1773, John Newton, former slave trader and infidel, preached a New Year's message from 1 Chronicles 17:16-17 in his church at Olney, England.  He told his church to look back at God's goodness, look around at God's promises, and look forward to future usefulness. In concluding, Newton introduced a poem he'd written for the occasion, the hymn "Amazing Grace".

Stanza 7 anon.
Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio (chorus added in 2006)

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below,
Shall be forever mine

When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

(chorus)
My chains are gone
I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
Unending love, Amazing grace

ARE YOUR PRIORITIES IN ORDER?

Are your priorities in order? A good question to ask anytime, but especially at the beginning of a new year.

Below is a resource I came across in the book "Confident Parenting" that provides a guideline for reflecting on the different components of your life. Are you being intentional about the Legacy you are leaving behind? Do you want more of Jesus in 2012?  MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PRIORITIES IN ORDER IN 2012!

Keeping all of the different components of your life in order is no easy task.  For your sake – and for the sake of your family – evaluating your priorities is an important step in keeping your life on track.

1. Relationship with God
Are you loving the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind?  (Matthew 22:37,38)

Are you seeking first His kingdom and righteousness?  (Matthew 6:33)

Are you spending regular time in prayer and in His word?

Are you growing in Christ-like character? Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7) and Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians -23)

2. Relationship with your spouse
Are you loving your spouse sacrificially and unconditionally as Christ loved the church? (Ephesians 5:25-28)

Are you meeting your spouses’ needs?
*          Emotional
*          Physical
*          Spiritual
*          Romantic

What would your spouses’ answer be?

3. Family
How often does your family only receive your leftover emotional scraps?

Do you view your children as gifts from the Lord? (Ps. 127:3)

Are you encouraging your children, are you comforting them, are you urging them to live lives worthy of the Lord? (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12)

Are you taking the responsibility and privilege of mentoring your children in their faith? (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

Are you loving, enjoying, and spending sufficient time with your children? How about your extended family?

4. Work
Are you being a good steward of the gifts, opportunities, and resources God has entrusted you with in your work for the benefit of God's kingdom? (Matt. 25:14-30)

Are you enjoying your work as a gift from God?  (Ecclesiastes. 3:22)

5. Ministry
Is your involvement in ministry …

*          Appropriate to your giftedness?
*          Sufficient (too little/ too much)?
*          Fruitful?
*          Rewarding? (Ephesians. 4:11-12 & 16)

Are you active in reaching the lost world for Christ? (Matt. 28:18-20)

6. Friends
Are you spending and enjoying time with good friends?

7. Personal
Do you like the person you are becoming?

How is your health and physical fitness?

Are you continuing to grow mentally?

Are you spending time and developing personal interests or hobbies?

Are your priorities in order?
